Every fortnight, WeDoData will share innovative formats spotted around the COP21. First chronicle today on the state of the oceans, inspired by the work of the scientist Sylvia Earle and her documentary Mission Blue.
Will the ocean issue be addressed on the negotiating table at the COP21? This is what the ocean advocates hope, pointing out that the first oxygen suppliers on the planet also absorb about a quarter of the carbon emissions released into the atmosphere by human activity. Yet, despite its key role in the regulation of climate change, the ocean ecosystem has not been invited.
After witnessing the effects of pollution, acidification and overexploitation on oceans for five decades, the American biologist Sylvia Earle compiled an edifying documentary entitled “Mission Blue”. Four Gifs were extracted from this documentary, which unveil some very disturbing data: in 65 years, half of the coral reefs have disappeared; we estimate the oceans host about 30,000 oil drilling sites today, while the first one was set up in 1947…
